Danner & Flemming Iris Tannat: A Darker, More Mysterious Expression of Iris

Danner & Flemming Iris Tannat: A Darker, More Mysterious Expression of Iris

Two exceptional iris varieties. One remarkable creation by master perfumer Antoine Lie.

For lovers of iris, few perfume houses are as fascinating as Danner & Flemming. With a philosophy rooted in cultivating their own precious iris in Bavaria, Germany, the house has established a distinctive approach to niche perfumery: allowing the raw material itself to become the true protagonist of every fragrance.

Following Iris Altesse, Iris Trousseau and Iris Poulsard, Danner & Flemming introduces its fourth creation, Iris Tannat, launching on 23 October 2026.

Created by renowned perfumer Antoine Lie, Iris Tannat explores a darker, earthier and more mysterious dimension of iris, inspired by the landscapes and winemaking traditions of the French Basque Country.

Two Iris Varieties, One Extraordinary Composition

For the first time in the house's collection, Iris Tannat brings together two distinct varieties of iris cultivated in Bavaria: Iris pallida and Iris germanica.

Each reveals a different personality.

Iris pallida contributes its elegant, powdery and mineral qualities, while Iris germanica introduces deeper woody and subtly fruity nuances.

Together, they create a multifaceted interpretation of one of perfumery's most precious raw materials.

At the heart of the formula lies an exceptional 3.5% concentration of iris butter and iris extract, approximately 35 times the amount commonly used in perfumery.

This extraordinary concentration reflects the philosophy of Danner & Flemming: true luxury is not simply about presentation, but about the quality, rarity and authenticity of the ingredients.

Inspired by the Soul of the French Basque Country

The inspiration for Iris Tannat emerged during a journey through the French Basque Country, a region between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees, celebrated for its dramatic landscapes and rich winemaking heritage.

The fragrance takes its name from Tannat, a grape variety known for producing powerful, deeply structured red wines.

This connection to winemaking becomes central to the fragrance's olfactory identity.

Wine lees bring an unusual fermented nuance, while rum adds warmth and depth. A remarkable oak barrel CO₂ extract, obtained from used wine casks, introduces woody, subtly smoky and gently sweet facets reminiscent of wines aged in oak.

Against this evocative background, iris reveals its mineral, earthy and powdery character.

The result is an intriguing dialogue between the elegance of iris and the richness of aged wine.

A Different Side of Iris

Iris is often associated with delicate powderiness, soft violet-like nuances and refined elegance.

Iris Tannat challenges this familiar image.

Here, iris becomes more mineral, earthy and textured. The floral elegance remains, but it is surrounded by the warmth of oak, the depth of wine lees, aromatic spices and subtle leathery undertones.

Rose and ylang-ylang contribute floral richness, while patchouli and vetiver reinforce the composition's earthy structure.

Rather than presenting iris as a delicate cosmetic powder, Antoine Lie explores its connection to soil, wood, time and nature.

It is a sophisticated interpretation that highlights just how versatile this extraordinary ingredient can be.

From Field to Bottle: The Danner & Flemming Philosophy

What makes Danner & Flemming particularly remarkable is the brand's direct involvement in cultivating and processing its own iris.

Iris rhizomes require years of careful cultivation, drying and maturation before their precious aromatic compounds can be extracted.

Rather than relying solely on commercially available ingredients, the house grows its own iris in Bavaria and develops fragrances around the unique characteristics of each harvest.

This approach is reflected in the brand's Millésime philosophy, inspired by the concept of vintage wines.

Just as the character of wine changes according to the conditions of a particular year, each iris harvest possesses its own individual qualities.

The inaugural Iris Tannat edition is limited to just 893 numbered bottles, making it an especially intriguing release for collectors and iris enthusiasts.

A Personal Note from Parfum Le Dance

Iris has always held a special place in my heart. It is my favourite ingredient in perfumery, and one that continues to surprise me with its remarkable versatility.

What I particularly admire about Danner & Flemming is their dedication to the ingredient itself. From cultivation and extraction to the final composition, every stage reflects an extraordinary level of patience, craftsmanship and respect for nature.

In a fragrance world increasingly driven by trends, I find this commitment to raw materials and authentic perfumery especially meaningful.

Iris Tannat represents another fascinating chapter in the house's exploration of iris, taking this beautiful ingredient into darker, more earthy and unexpected territory.
